Custom Gobo Design: 7 Things You Must Know Before Ordering

Jun 08,2026 | JINGYU OPTOELEC

You have seen those crisp logo projections on floors and walls at trendy bars and night markets. So you decide to order a custom gobo for your own venue. But when the first test projection lights up, something looks wrong. The text is jagged. The logo is backwards. The edges are blurry. This happens more often than you might think. Custom gobos are simple in concept but have specific technical requirements. Knowing these seven things before you order will save you time, money, and disappointment.

Steel vs. Glass: Which Material Do You Actually Need?

The first decision is material. Steel gobos are laser-cut from thin metal sheets. They work well for bold, simple shapes like logos, arrows, or basic patterns. Steel is cheap (typically $10–$25 per gobo) and durable. However, steel cannot reproduce fine details, gradients, or photographic images. Glass gobos are etched and coated, allowing for complex designs, multiple colors, and even half-tones. A custom glass gobo costs more ($40–$100+), but it is the only choice for high-end branding or realistic imagery. If your design has more than 10 words or any shading, skip steel and go straight to glass.

Resolution and Line Thickness Matter More Than You Think

Gobo projection magnifies everything, including mistakes. A line that looks perfectly thick on your computer screen at 100% size might turn into an invisible hairline when projected 15 feet across a wall. The industry standard rule is simple: no line should be thinner than 0.5mm in the final gobo artwork. For steel gobos, the minimum line width is even larger—around 0.8mm—because the laser cutter needs physical space to work. Text is another trap. Sans-serif fonts with bold weights project cleanly. Thin serif fonts or scripts with delicate flourishes will break apart. Always size your smallest text to be at least 4mm tall on the gobo itself.

Artwork Format and the "Black Means Clear" Rule

This is the number one mistake first-time buyers make. Gobo manufacturers do not see colors the way a printer does. For steel gobos, anything black in your artwork becomes a hole where light passes through. White areas block the light. Grays do not exist—the laser either cuts or it does not. For glass gobos, the rules are more flexible, but you still need to submit vector files (AI, CDR, or EPS) rather than JPEGs or PNGs. Raster images scale poorly and produce jagged edges. Send your designer a template from the gobo manufacturer before creating final artwork. Every brand has slightly different maximum sizes and safe zones.

Mirror Image: Do You Need to Flip Your Design?

Projecting a gobo straight down onto a floor reverses the image left to right. Projecting through a lens system onto a wall does not. This confuses many buyers. If your gobo will be floor-mounted and projected upward onto a ceiling or downward onto a dance floor, you need to mirror your artwork horizontally. If it will be wall-mounted projecting straight ahead, no mirroring is required. When in doubt, ask your manufacturer. Some modern gobo projectors include electronic image flipping, but it is safer to design the artwork correctly from the start.

Heat Tolerance and Projector Compatibility

Gobos sit directly in the light path, absorbing significant heat. Cheap plastic film gobos are fine for low-power LED projectors under 50W. For anything above that, you need metal or glass. Even then, glass gobos require a thermal coating to prevent cracking. Before ordering, check your projector's manual for its maximum gobo size and thickness. A 25.4mm (1-inch) glass gobo will not fit into a projector designed for 19mm steel discs. Compatibility mistakes are expensive, and most manufacturers do not accept returns on custom gobos.

Lead Time and Rush Orders

Standard custom gobo production takes 5 to 10 business days. Steel gobos are faster because the process is purely mechanical. Glass gobos require etching, coating, and quality inspection, which adds time. If you need a gobo for a weekend event, order at least three weeks in advance. Rush services exist but cost 50–100% more. Plan ahead, and you will save real money.

Testing Your Design Before Committing to Production

The safest approach is to order one prototype first, even if the per-unit price is higher. Project it in your actual venue at the actual distance you plan to use. Notice how the edges look. Check the text readability from standing height. Walk around to see how the pattern behaves from different angles.

Once you approve the prototype, order the rest in volume to get the lowest per-gobo price. This extra step takes a week but prevents ordering 50 unusable gobos. A little patience upfront makes the difference between a professional projection and an embarrassing mistake.
