25 Wedding Gobo Ideas That Actually Look Good

Oct 23,2026 | JINGYU OPTOELEC

A wedding gobo is a metal or glass disc that sits inside a projector and throws a pattern onto a floor, wall, or ceiling. Done well, it is one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost decorations at a wedding. Done badly, it looks like a slideshow.

These 25 ideas are grouped by where the light lands — because placement matters more than the design itself.

On the floor: the monogram

1. Classic monogram circle. Your initials in a circle with the date. The most-ordered wedding gobo, and still the most reliable.

2. Split monogram. Two initials side by side with an ampersand. Reads better than a circle in narrow entranceways.

3. Script hand-lettering. Flowing calligraphy projected on a dark dance floor. Photographs beautifully.

4. Monogram in a wreath. Initials inside a laurel or olive wreath — softer than a plain circle.

5. Date-only projection. Just "06.14.2026" in a large serif. Minimal, modern, very photogenic.

6. Welcome mat projection. "Welcome to the [Surname] wedding" placed where guests physically walk over it.

7. Hashtag projection. Your wedding hashtag, for the couple who wants guests posting.

On the walls: storytelling

8. Venue silhouette. The venue's own building outline, projected on an interior wall. Deeply personal, rarely seen.

9. Skyline of where you met. A city skyline line-art — New York, Lisbon, Seoul.

10. Star map. The night sky exactly as it looked on the date you met. Requires a clean vector but looks extraordinary.

11. Portrait gobo. A photographic image of a loved one — often used for memorial moments.

12. Map coordinates. The latitude/longitude of the proposal spot, in thin type.

13. Your pet. Yes, really. Portrait gobos of a dog or cat are one of our most-requested custom designs.

On the ceiling: atmosphere

14. Leaf breakup. Dappled foliage across the ceiling — makes a tent or ballroom feel like an outdoor garden.

15. Tree shadow. Branch silhouettes. Warmer and more organic than leaf breakup.

16. String light pattern. Simulated festoon bulbs on a plain ceiling.

17. Starry sky. Scattered points of varying intensity. Avoid perfectly even spacing — it reads as fake.

18. Cloud pattern. Soft, low-contrast clouds for daytime-feeling rooms.

On the dance floor: energy

19. Disco ball pattern. Not a real disco ball — a projected pattern that covers a larger area.

20. Falling petals. Animated or static, depending on the projector.

21. Water ripple. Ideal for poolside or beach receptions.

22. Confetti burst. A frozen explosion of dots, projected at the moment of the first dance.

Details people forget

23. Table number projection. Numbers projected above each table — removes an entire printed item.

24. Bar menu projection. The cocktail list on the wall behind the bar.

25. Exit projection. "Thank you for celebrating with us" on the way out, where guests leave.

Which designs fail in practice

Three patterns consistently disappoint:

Fine text under 2mm line weight. It blurs at distance. Increase stroke weight or increase projector power.

Full-color photos in low-wattage projectors. A 25W unit cannot render a photograph with enough contrast. Full-color portraits need 60W and above.

Patterns projected onto textured or colored walls. A gobo on a brick wall looks like a smudge. Flat, light-colored surfaces only.

How many projectors do you actually need?

One projector covers roughly 3–6 square meters of surface at usable brightness, depending on wattage and ambient light. For a typical wedding:

  • Ceremony entrance: 1 projector (monogram)
  • Reception ceiling: 2 projectors for a 100-guest room
  • Dance floor: 1 projector, ideally higher wattage

Most weddings use 2–3 projectors. Rental is common, but if you host more than a handful of events a year, buying is cheaper by the third event.

What it costs

A custom glass wedding gobo runs 39–120 depending on colors. A 25W LED projector starts around 400–500; 60W IP67 units for outdoor ceremonies run 650–800. Design and proofing are typically free.

Frequently asked questions

Can a gobo be used outdoors? Yes, but the projector must be weather-rated (IP65 or higher) and you should avoid projecting in daylight — gobos need low ambient light.

Can I reuse the gobo after the wedding? Yes. Many couples keep it as a keepsake, or venues reuse a generic pattern for future events.

How far in advance should I order? Order 3–4 weeks before the event. Production is 3–7 days, but you want time for a proof revision and shipping.

Do I need a custom design, or can I buy stock? Stock patterns (leaves, stars, clouds) cost less and ship immediately. Monograms and portraits must be custom.
