Steel vs Glass Gobos: Which One Should You Actually Buy?

Oct 23,2026 | JINGYU OPTOELEC

Every gobo buyer eventually hits this question. Steel is cheaper, glass is better — that is the usual summary, and it is almost useless. Here is the version that actually helps you decide.

How each one is made

Stainless steel gobos are etched. The pattern is chemically or laser-etched out of a thin steel disc, and light passes through the holes. Anything black on the design is metal; anything bright is a hole.

Glass gobos are coated. A glass disc is layered with dichroic coatings that block or pass light by wavelength. The pattern is a coating, not a hole — which is why glass can do things steel physically cannot.

This one manufacturing difference explains every practical difference below.

When steel is the right choice

Steel is not the "cheap option" — it is the correct option in specific cases:

1. Low-wattage projectors (under 80W). A wedding monogram on a 25W or 60W unit has no heat problem. Steel works for years there.

2. Bold, simple designs. Large initials, chunky logos, simple shapes. If your design has no fine detail, glass buys you nothing.

3. Stock patterns. Leaves, stars, breakup patterns — steel catalogs are enormous and ship immediately. Stock glass in the same variety often means waiting for production.

4. Short-lived installations. A one-week event, a seasonal display. The steel will outlive the event at a third of the price.

When glass is the only choice

1. Any projector 80W and above. This is the hard line. Steel discs warp and discolor under sustained high heat. If your projector is 100W, 150W, or 300W, steel is a recurring cost, not a saving.

2. Small text and fine logos. A logo with a tagline, contact details, or thin serif type needs etched precision that steel holes cannot hold. At distance, steel fine detail turns into mush.

3. Full color. Photographs, gradients, brand color matches — glass only. Steel physically cannot pass a gradient; a hole is either open or closed.

4. Permanent installations. A storefront or venue logo that runs 8 hours a day needs the heat tolerance. The glass gobo bought once will outlast three steel replacements.

The cost mistake most buyers make

The wrong comparison is price per gobo. The right one is price per year of usable projection.

A $40 steel gobo in a 150W projector lasts perhaps 9 months before heat warping degrades the image. The $70 glass equivalent lasts 4+ years. Over four years: steel costs ~$160 plus four rounds of re-ordering and re-shipping. Glass costs $70 once.

At low wattage the math flips completely — steel at $40 for a 30W indoor unit may genuinely outlast your interest in the project.

Match the material to the wattage, not to the budget.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a steel gobo in a high-power projector just to save money? It will work — briefly. Heat warping typically shows within months at 100W+, first as a soft image, then as a permanently discolored disc.

Do glass gobos break easily? In transit, if badly packed — which is why rigid packaging matters. In the projector, no. Glass gobos are tempered and handle thermal stress far better than steel.

Is there a middle option? Yes — dichroic glass gobos with steel inserts exist for two-color designs, and coated steel (high-temperature reflective coating) extends steel life at mid wattages. Ask your supplier what they offer above 80W.

Which is better for wedding monograms? At typical wedding wattages (25–80W) with a bold design, steel is perfectly fine and cheaper. Script fonts and fine detail need glass.
