4 & 7 Logo Projector: When a Rotating Multi-Gobo Unit Beats a Single
Oct 28,2026 | JINGYU OPTOELEC
A multi-gobo projector holds 4 or 7 pattern discs in a rotating carousel and cycles through them on a timer. It costs 15–30% more than a single-gobo unit of the same wattage. Whether that premium is worth it depends entirely on one question: does your message change?
If it never changes, buy a single. If it changes weekly, the carousel pays for itself almost immediately.
How the carousel actually works
A disc holder rotates inside the projector housing, positioning one gobo at a time in the light path. Rotation is timed — typically 5 seconds to several minutes per image — and on better units you control the dwell time and the order.
Most units also support static lock, so the carousel becomes a normal single-gobo projector when you do not need rotation. That matters: it means you are not paying for a feature you must use.
The trade-off nobody mentions
Each gobo is smaller. A 7-slot carousel divides the available area into seven discs. Since the housing's image circle is fixed, each individual gobo in a 7-slot unit has a smaller usable image area than a single-gobo unit of the same model.
Practical consequence: fine detail and small text suffer first. A logo with a tagline that reads perfectly on a single-gobo 60W unit may need a step up in wattage to hold the same clarity in a 7-slot unit. Ask for the per-slot image diameter before ordering — this is the number that decides whether your design survives.
Rule of thumb: 4-slot for logos with detail, 7-slot for simple patterns and text.
When the carousel is clearly right
Restaurants and bars. Menu of the day, happy hour, event tonight. A 4-slot unit cycles through four messages without anyone touching it.
Retail promotions. Rotating brand mark, sale message, and seasonal pattern — one unit, three jobs.
Hotels and venues. Different messages for different hours: breakfast, dinner service, evening event.
Multi-tenant buildings. A 7-slot unit rotating through seven tenant logos in a lobby is dramatically cheaper than seven signs.
Advertising and rental. A single unit serving multiple clients by swapping slots.
When it is not worth the money
A fixed storefront logo. If the logo goes up and stays, a single-gobo unit is brighter per dollar.
A 25W budget unit. At low wattage, splitting the image area across slots costs real clarity. Small carousel units often disappoint.
Outdoor long-throw installs. Detail loss matters more at distance. For a 10 m+ facade, run one strong single-gobo unit per message.

Ordering gobos for a multi-slot unit
Two practical points:
Order all slots at once. Mixing later batches risks slight color variation between discs — invisible on a single gobo, obvious when the same logo cycles in two shades.
Design for the smallest slot. Design to the per-slot image circle, not the housing's outer dimensions. And because each slot is smaller, reduce color count where possible: a one- or two-color design holds up far better at reduced image area than a full-color photographic one.
A worked example
A bar wants three rotating messages: brand mark, "Happy Hour 5–7", and tonight's event.
- Throw distance: 5 m to an interior wall, low ambient light
- Messages: 1 logo (detail) + 2 text (simple)
- Slot choice: 4-slot — enough for three messages plus a spare, and larger per-slot area than 7
Sizing: 5 m on a wall → 40W bracket; 4-slot reduces per-slot area → step up to 60W to protect logo detail. Gobos: brand mark in 2-color glass, text in single-color glass — text gobos are cheaper and hold fine type better than multicolor at small sizes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add gobos later to empty slots? Yes, but order the whole set together for color consistency.
Do 7-slot units project dimmer than 4-slot? Not inherently — total light output is the same. The difference is per-image area, which affects apparent sharpness rather than brightness.
Can the rotation be stopped? Most units support static lock. Confirm before buying if you plan to use it as a single.
Are gobos for 4-slot and 7-slot units interchangeable? No — slot dimensions differ between models. Match gobos to your exact unit.
